Exquisite Handmade Gardens

We are a husband and wife partnership near Hereford who creates small, fine handmade gardens, courtyard retreats and potted landscapes that can include art, ornaments and imposing rock features.

Our gardens make a unique statement.

They have character and presence,

be that in a subtle or bold way.

With nature for inspiration, we follow the principle of balanced asymmetry and simplicity. We create organic shapes that are suggestive of natural forms. Your garden can be sweetly scented or spicily aromatic, it can be luscious or minimalist. The result is a calm and relaxing place.

As a backdrop to the planting, we may add colour with elegantly painted garden walls; fine, evocative trompe l'oeil can equally complement and enhance the design.

While respecting the space, and in fact enhancing it, we can also bring grandeur to small outdoor areas with prominent planters, sizeable rocks, or larger-than-life sculptures that add atmosphere to the surroundings. We abide by the design principle Big in Small: big enhances small; small accentuates small.

Speaking of natural forms... there are straight lines in nature. Angles and straight lines offer contrast, frame natural shapes: an opening in a fence, a staggered deck or jetty, angular borders. It is like reinforcing a point.

 

We will select the plants and generally do the planting ourselves; source high-quality, handmade furnishings and features; work with expert contractors and plant nurseries; and where applicable 'juggle' with large rocks until they are just right (well, the contractors will handle them under our direction).

When possible, we avoid using concrete and cement, whose manufacture is very polluting, favouring instead dry laying.
